چکیده

Linguistic control factors such as word stress and phrasefinality affect not only duration and pitch, but also spectral structure and spectral dynamics. We propose methods for predicting and synthesizing prosodic effects on spectral balance: (i) A new multi-dimensional measure of spectral balance, in which energy is measured in five ”formant frequency range” bands. (ii) Statistical methods for analyzing the effects of multiple interacting factors on spectral balance. (iii) A method for synthesizing speech whose spectral balance is controlled by prosodic factors.

Effects of Prosodic Factors on Spectral Balance: Analysis and Synthesis

In natural speech, prosodic factors such as accent, stress, phrasal position and speaking style play important roles in controlling several acoustic features, including segmental duration, pitch, and spectral balance, i.e., the amplitude pattern across different frequency ranges of the power spectrum. To synthesize speech that sounds natural, these effects need to be accurately modeled. In this...

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...

Prosodic hierarchy and spectral realization of vowels in French

The aim of this study is to relate spectral realization of vowels and prosodic hierarchy in continuous speech. The IRISA speech alignment system is used and formant values of oral vowels are automatically measured in a total of 500,000 segments from around 30 hours of journalistic broadcast speech in French. The link between the duration of vowels and their spectral realization (through their f...

Integration of Intonation in Trainable Speech Synthesis

Current developments in artificial speech synthesis place more emphasis on spectral continuities and diverse prosodic effects. The trainable HMM-based speech synthesis method has generated more continuous spectral structure than unit selection method in recent study, but the pitch contour generated by HMM-based method trends to be over-smoothed and lacks syllable variance in Chinese. In this pa...

Interaction between the Scottish English System of Prominence and Vowel Length

This study looks into interaction between the quasi-phonemic vowel length contrast in Scottish English and its word-prosodic system. We show that under the same phrasal accent the phonetically short vowels of the morphologically conditioned quasi-phonological contrast are produced with significantly more laryngeal effort (spectral balance) than the long ones, while the vowels do not differ in q...
